Finding a premade chicken coop that’s spacious but also affordable is like finding a needle in a haystack. Most pre-fab chicken coops are quite expensive — I’m talking anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000+, and even at that price point, you’ll be lucky if you can fit a dozen birds in them.
So for people who don’t want to build their own coop, I generally recommend looking for some type of shed that you can convert into a chicken coop — and I might have just found the best one yet.
The other day when I was browsing Amazon (as one does), I came across a new listing: the KEIKI Metal Storage Shed. It caught my eye just because it’s really cute, but the more I read about it, the more I became convinced that it would be an ideal chicken coop.
Call me crazy, but this 10×12 shed would make a really great chicken coop with just a little modification. And with a footprint that big, you could easily house a few dozen birds.
This metal shed is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide, which shakes out to 120 square feet of interior space. The general recommendation is 4 square feet of coop space per bird, which means this shed could house up to 30 chickens comfortably — way more than any other chicken coop I’ve seen.
That’s not all, though. Because it’s meant to be a shed, the structure has a full-size door, making it easy to walk into and clean. It’s also equipped with three functional windows, and it has ventilation on the gable ends — perfect for letting moisture escape your coop. There are even shelves for window boxes, so you can have the cutest coop on the block.
Of course, you will have to make some modifications to turn this structure into a chicken coop. It will need roosting bars and nesting boxes inside, but they’re quite easy to make with some 2x4s and a power drill. You’ll also want to cover the windows with hardware cloth to keep out predators, and you may want to put down some type of flooring, as well.
Still, you can’t deny it’s a pretty sweet setup for just over $550. You will have to assemble it yourself, but if you compare it to a $500 chicken coop like this one, it’s undeniable that you’re getting an epic deal.
The shed even comes in a bunch of different colors to match your aesthetic. Seriously, could it be any cuter?!
